Thursday, the day before the proposal, Sarah’s car was hit by an ambulance on I-695. Greg had to drive her to work the next day. When he picked her up, he told her that they were going to do something special that night, since she had such a terrible experience the prior day.
Greg blindfolded Sarah with a tee-shirt in the parking garage, at Union Memorial Hospital. He drove for approximately 25 minutes before he stopped the car. He told her that she had to wait in the car blindfolded and that he would be right back. When Greg returned, he informed Sarah that for this portion of the surprise all of the windows would have to remain open, including the sunroof. (Keep in mind that it is approximately 30 degrees outside.) They drove for 10 more minutes when they arrived at their next location.
Greg asked Sarah to close her eyes and count to 20 She was then to remove the blindfold and “do whatever felt right.” She followed his instructions, and quickly realized that she was in front of their house. When Sarah opened the front door, the house was dark. In the background, the song, “When a Man Loves a Woman,” was softly playing. Candles and long-stemmed red roses created a path throughout the house. Sarah followed the trail. It led up the stairs, where Greg was waiting with a camera, to capture the moment she walked through the door.
On the floor, in red rose petals, he had spelled “Will You Marry Me?” Next to the display, there were more roses, balloons, and the first teddy bear Greg had ever given to Sarah. From the stereo, “Valentine,” the first song they had ever danced to, began to play. Greg told Sarah how much he loved her and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He then got down on one knee, presented the ring, and asked her to marry him. She said yes, and they slow danced to the remainder of the song.
Greg then asked Sarah to shower and put on a dress. Greg had changed clothes as well because he had proposed in jeans without a shirt. (Sarah had told him years ago that she loved the way he looked in just a pair of jeans.) She went downstairs to find that Greg had set up a candle-lit dinner, which happened to be Olive Garden, her favorite! (She suddenly realized the purpose of keeping the windows open during the car ride.) The remainder of the evening was spent calling family and friends to share their wonderful news!
